Land Preparation at Saivou

CASH CROP PROGRAM (Peanut) at Vatukacevaceva, Rakiraki

Business Incubator Rakiraki Co-ordinator Semi along with a contractor on the site of Beqa Maraivalu on the land prepartion for 2 acres of peanut. This is the initiative that is currently being conducted by the Centre in conjuction with Government's Demand Driven Approach (DDA) ; Export Promotion & Import Substituton Programs in the District of Ra. The Center estimates a total of 4 incubatees for peanut with a total of 8 acres to be harvested in the month of February 2011.

Waimalua Beekeeping Delivery at Tailevu on Sept 10th.

The delivery was done at about 4am in the morning.


Live bees in single boxes being neatly arranged on the prepared site for Vetaia who is our incubater in Tailevu. Waisake who is the NCSMED/BIC technical officer instructing the 'delivery team' on the placement of the hives on its stands.  
Rakiraki NCSMED/BIC coordinator , Mr Semi.Kacanavesikula ( bula shirt) along with our Tailevu Incubates, Waisea & Vetaia supervising the entire operation goes according to plan.
The interior of the Delivery truck as it look during delivery to the 5 new incubates being assisted, monitored and coordiantored from Rakiraki. Each incubates was also assisted with 1 bag of sugar (not edible) for the bees to feed upon during rainny seaseons,as a precaution to starvation which is one of the major causes of hive deaths in Fiji.

Nadarivatu Training ( Savatu District) 4- 5th Aug'010.

Objectives:

The 7 group members from Savatu District representing Lewa, Marou and Naiyaca villages in collaboration with ADRA approached McKenezie Beelines , Rakiraki to facilitate the basic and essential beekeeping training. This is in response to the deteriorating condition of the 20 hives in each of this locations.

The management of MBCL approached BIC , Rakiraki to co-ordinate and facilitate the beekeeper's skills training. The follow-up training was than initiated by NCSMED(BIC-RA) this month to monitor the progress of the original seven(7).

It was a memorable day for the our "brother's & sisters" as they was exposed and introduced to beekeeping.

John Caldera is the leading trainer along with Waisake and Isimeli translating things into Fijian. Semi is the TEAM leader and Richard as the support services.

Waimalua Settlement

 A three day program on practical bee training for the bee keekeepers of Waimalua Settlement was given July 28 to July 30th.
1st Day  A tour of the Uluda beeline factory was given to familiarise the beekeepers with the processing procedure
2nd Day Local hives were monitored
3rd Day Bee colonies were split and some honey harvested
Training was considered a great success.

Wainivula Nursey 7/24

 New cooperative project underway between the BIC and The Good Neighbor International (TGNI). TGNI is located in Wainivula and and run by Pastor Paul Ramswarup. The partnership is setting up a seedling nursery and we visited the site 7/24, pictures show construction at that time. An office and several plots of land on site will be provided for training purposes.

Basic Business and Beekeeping Training
(Semi, Wise, Richard and John Caldera )
A basic business planning seminar was presented at the morning session by John &   Semi with John & Wise giving a "hands-on" practical beekeeping lesson at local hives in the afternoon. Nan and Chris joined us the next day and were our " chain buyers" during the inactive business presentation. John & Wise put on the bee suits again on the 2nd afternoon and continued with practical beekeeping.Good synergy was achieved through-out with Semi and Wise giving follow-ups to John in Fijian.
